Three Board Games for Money Skills, Family Fun, and Big Laughs (Not Monopoly)

If you're hoping to grow your wealth, teach your kids (or grandkids) smart money habits, and have a blast along the way, I’ve got a not-so-secret weapon: board games! As someone who's passionate about financial empowerment, I’m always looking for ways to blend learning with laughter. Here are three board games that often make appearances on our family playroom carpet—with a special mention for a fourth that’s perfect once the kids are a bit older. 🎲💸

While these games are officially recommended for ages 8 and up, in my experience, children can begin to grasp the basics with adult guidance as early as 4. This early start is crucial because financial skills, much like compounding interest, grow significantly over time. Introducing kids to counting, money management, and decision-making early on sets them up for a stronger financial future. Time truly is the key ingredient in developing lifelong money habits, and board games provide a fun, hands-on way to cultivate these skills from an early age. ⏳💡

1. For Sale: A Favorite That Grows With Your Kids 🏘️

We first picked this gem up in a cozy little game shop in Lille, France, when my son was just six. It’s a quick card game about buying and selling properties, and honestly, it’s so much fun for 3-6 players (though two works great for little ones)! Now my daughter, at age four and mastering her double digits, is starting to join the action too.

Why we love it:

  • Teaches bidding strategy and the basics of how money and value work, with charming illustrations that entertain and inspire!
  • Fast-paced and silly enough to keep all ages engaged.
  • Perfect for building math confidence—counting coins and comparing numbers gets way more exciting with a little friendly competition!

2. Happy City: Build, Plan, and Dream Together 🌇

Bought during a family trip to China, Happy City has become a regular fixture at our house. Both my eight-year-old and four-year-old love creating their own colorful cities, and the game’s simple rules help them pick up the basics fast, including a gentle intro to single-digit multiplication.

Why we love it:

  • Encourages planning, counting, and resource management.
  • Imagination runs wild—my kids (and my husband!) delight in making the wackiest, happiest cities possible!
  • Easy setup and quick rounds mean you can sneak in a game before dinner or bedtime.

3. The Game of Life: Props, Paths, and Retirement Dreams 🛞

What could be a better intro to the concept of “life choices” than The Game of Life? We received this as a Christmas gift about two years ago, and both kids still love it. The little cars, tiny people, and spinning wheel make it super approachable for young children.

Why we love it:

  • Kids learn choices have consequences... but it’s all in good fun!
  • The “pretend jobs, salaries, and houses” offer awesome conversation starters about dreams and careers.
  • It’s tactile—those little props help anchor abstract ideas about money and decision-making.

Bonus For The Future: Cashflow (Aiming High!)🐀🏁

I admit this one might be a bit ambitious! We’ve tried playing the adult version of Cashflow a few times, and my son is definitely intrigued. But it takes about 90+ minutes, and honestly, my patience runs out faster than the balance sheet! I’m saving it for when the kids are a little older; the official recommendation is 14+. Looking forward to trying it again in a couple of years. 😃

Why I’m excited to keep trying:

  • Cashflow is like a masterclass in investing, budgeting, and using money as a tool.
  • It’s never too early to dream big—this game introduces financial independence and wealth-building concepts in an engaging format.
  • Though I don’t love how it frames children as purely an expense, it can be a good conversation starter!

If you want to raise empowered, money-smart kids and have a blast as a family, there’s no need to wait. Start with games that match their age and attention span, build their confidence, and you’ll be amazed by the conversations—and financial skills—that blossom! Living rich isn’t just about dollars—it’s about laughing together, learning together, and shaping your own joyful family story. ❤️🏡
